Women and Girls in Sports 2025

Today, Saturday April 12th, is the Vancouver Whitecaps annual Women and Girls in Sports match, a day we always look forward to. It’s a time to celebrate and spotlight the incredible women in our community who shape the game, from the pitch to the stands. In past years, The Sisters have hosted a panel alongside the Whitecaps to share stories and elevate the voices of women in sport. Unfortunately, this year that panel couldn’t happen, but that doesn’t mean we’re any less proud or any less loud.

When we founded the Sisters, we didn’t just want to be another supporters’ group, we wanted to be a movement. A movement that welcomed more women into the stands, made soccer more inclusive and amplified voices that had long been overlooked. We started with women, but quickly branched out to include BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+ and Indigenous community members, ensuring that our space was truly representative of the diverse supporters who love this game.

Now, as an integral part of the Whitecaps community, we see firsthand the value women and marginalized supporters bring to the game, not just in the stands, but across Major League Soccer.

There’s a misconception that women’s voices in soccer fandom are somehow secondary. But anyone who has come to one of our events or connected with one of our members knows that’s not true. We bring the kind of passionate and joyful energy that transforms a stadium. Our love for this club is fierce and it shows every match day.

From day one, The Sisters has been about inclusion. The soccer world can be intimidating, especially for people who don’t fit the traditional mold of a fan, but we believe the stands should be a place where everyone feels like they belong. We challenge the status quo so that more people can experience the joy of the game without fear or judgment.

Being a supporter isn’t just about the game, it’s about the people. We host events, fundraise, support local soccer initiatives and advocate for the women’s game. Whether it’s rallying behind Project 8 (now the NLS) or showing up for youth soccer programs, we’re in it for the long game.

Women’s supporter groups are growing across Canada and the MLS and we’re proud to be part of that wave. The Sisters have helped shape the Whitecaps supporter culture into something more vibrant, more inclusive and more connected. We’re not just showing up we’re leading by example. We sing, we cheer, we show up and we’ll keep showing up; for the players, for the fans and for every person who watches a match and thinks, “There’s a place for me here.”

The Sisters aren’t just part of the Whitecaps community, we help define it.

And don’t forget! Vancouver Rise FC kicks off their inaugural season next Wednesday April 16th at BC Place! If you’re looking to support the Rise, our new Women’s Professional team and want to join their supporters group, check out the Crow Collective website, Instagram or BlueSky.
