New Professional Canadian Women’s Soccer League

What is Project 8?

Founded in 2022, Project 8 will develop Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league.

To create an opportunity for every Canadian to engage with the promise of sport through the establishment of a women’s professional soccer league founded on the principles of inclusion, community, and identity. We believe in the power of visible opportunities, icons, and pathways for Canadians in sport. Our goal is to validate the perception of Canada as a global leader in sport and gender equality.

Project 8 Mission Statement

Here in Vancouver, Stephanie Labbé was hired by the Whitecaps to be the club’s general manager of women’s soccer. The Whitecaps are one of the first organizations to join Project 8.

“I am extremely honoured to be joining Vancouver Whitecaps FC as the general manager of women’s soccer,” added Labbé. “Being able to have an impact on the next generation of players through my experience, understanding and passion for the game excites me beyond words. Knowing the club’s vision and goals of bringing professional women’s soccer to Canada, and being a leader in this space aligns with my ambitions. I will continue to push the envelope on what is possible in this country, and provide opportunities for our Canadian players to have the choice to stay home in Canada to pursue their dreams. Go ‘Caps!”

Stephanie Labbé

It isn’t just the Whitecaps and Stephanie Labbé that are excited about the return of a professional women’s league in Canada. Supporters of the Whitecaps and women’s soccer are already eagerly awaiting Project 8 and are looking forward to 2025.

“The women have achieved so much with so little. I mean, what could they achieve if we actually invested?” pondered Oliver. “That’s the thing. The opportunity to have a women’s league, we just have to build it and we will come. The supporters are here. We will support our team and I think the whole soccer culture is growing.

Where you Come in…

Before the league kicks off in 2025, the production team in charge of Project 8 video content is looking for relevant content.

Project 8 reached out to the Sisters to assist them in finding ideal contributors for a series of stories of individuals, teams and organizations that have a connection to Canadian women’s soccer across Canada. If you have a story or connection to share or you were around to support the Women’s Whitecaps team in the 2000s please send us an email at VancouverSouthSisters@gmail.com. We will pass along your stories and contact information to the production team. They are looking to film at the last home game of the season on Oct 21st, but there may be some other opportunities too.

We are proud to be a part of this initiative and look forward to supporting our new Women’s team!
